    Commanded to Love

    September 18, 2015

As Christ followers we are commanded to love God and love others (cf. Deuteronomy 6: 4-6; Matthew 22: 36-40).  Jesus said in the gospel of John, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep my word.” (cf. John 14:23)  Jesus said  the world will know that you are my disciples, “if you love one another” (cf. John 13:35).   Jesus even told us to “love our enemies.” (cf. Matthew 5:44) This raises the question, “can we be forced to love?”  Our source and answer for love is Jesus Himself.  Was Jesus forced to go to the cross?  No, He willingly laid down His life for us, while we were still dead in our sins.  Jesus demonstrated what love looked like.  He took action out of love.  “God so loved…that He gave” (John 3:16)  Because of our gratitude of what Christ has done on our behalf, and with the help of His Holy Spirit, we will put love to “action.”  God’s love for us was not “cheap.”  It was costly.  Love is going to cost us something too.  Love will cost us our will.  Because He is our Savior and Lord - He has reign and rule of our heart, soul and might!  We will put love to action, because He first loved us!  You and I have many opportunities each and every day to put love to action - how are you doing?
