There is a saying that goes something like this, “A man’s work is from sun to sun, but a woman’s (mothers) work is never done.” - that seems to be true in most cases. The family structure, the way God designed it, is so important. If it wasn’t for your Mother and Father you wouldn’t be here - literally! The bible says to “honor your father and mother.” As we honor mothers on this day (Sunday), it’s good for us to not only think about how much they really do, but what they have been “entrusted” with. Entrusted defined as “to charge or invest with a trust or responsibility; to assign the care of.” There are some great portraits of motherhood and examples of “entrustment” in scripture. Jochebed, probably the least known and talked about (Moses mother). Hagar, the least popular (Ishmael’s mother). A little more known and popular - Hanna (Samuel’s mother). Probably the most known and popular - Mary (Jesus’ mother). What do these women all have in common with you? - they were “entrusted” with a life, the greatest responsibility of all! I’m aware that Mother’s Day is a difficult time for some of you. Maybe you want to be a mother but cannot. Maybe some of you have not had the best of mothers. For some your mother has passed on. Perhaps some mothers have lost a child to death and some of you are experiencing the pain of a wayward child. The apostle Paul compares the love, pains and responsibility of the gospel to motherhood in 1 Thessalonians chapter two - “…just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children…impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives…laboring night and day…we exhorted, and comforted, and charged…as a (father) does his own children.” “Thank You!” to all Mother’s, past, present and future - you are not alone - God is with you every step of the way, therefore, “walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.” (cf. 1 Thessalonians 2: 12)
