    Holiness

    March 1, 2021

    “Essential Theology in troubling times”

    Holiness

In simplest terms, holiness is the believer living out his/her life in obedience to his/her new nature and new identity in Christ.  The bible instructs us in 1 Peter 1:14-15, “As obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct.”

When you answered the call to salvation, you were declared righteous before a holy God (first work of grace).  You were given a new nature and identity because of what Jesus Christ did on your behalf.  Sanctification, the second work of grace, is an act/process of being made holy which results in a changed life-style.  Holiness will produce the manifestation of the fruit of the spirit spoken of in Galatians 5 (verses 22 thru 25).

There is no such thing as a christian who continues/practices sin.  The bible is very clear that “…those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” (cf. Galatians 5: 19-21)

When one holds to the Theology of holiness (the doctrine of the Bible), some would say, “oh, you think you are holier than thou?” and I would reply, “no, but I have a perfection of intention.”  That is - I realize like the apostle Paul, “not that I have already attained, or am perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” (cf. Philippians 3:12)

The doctrine of holiness is a serious matter, don’t take my word for it, take God’s word for it - “pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord.” (cf. Hebrews 12: 14)

Holiness is also obtainable, why else would the Lord command us to be holy?!

Holiness is also what is best for you and me, otherwise, God would not command it and Jesus would not have prayed that we would process it -

“Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.”  - Jesus (cf. John 17)
