Humility. “The feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others; lack of pride.” Latin word humilis, meaning “low.” Humility is not a quality in the white house nor demonstrated much in our society but should be a quality for those that profess Christ. In fact, God commands us to be humble. “Seek humility”…”put on humility”…”have a humble mind”…”cloth yourselves with humility toward one another”…” - all bible references. Humility is closely connected to the quality of “poor in spirit” and ‘“meekness” in which Jesus said “blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”…”blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth” (cf. Matthew 5).
Biblical humility acknowledges and obeys the one who is truly Lord - the Lord Jesus Christ! The One in whom “…every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (cf. Phil. 2: 11).
The Bible also warns that “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud” (Prov.16: 18-19). An arrogant attitude, in contrast to humility, manifests itself as independent from God.
We are well reminded of the prophet Isaiah, “The loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day” (2:17).
Jesus exemplified humility - from the cradle to the cross! “Behold, your king is coming to you…humble and mounted on a donkey” (Zech.9:9). “And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Phil.2:8).
“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up”
(James 4:10). I have a heaven burden that too many will miss heaven by 18 inches. Why 18 inches? That is the approximate distance from your head to your heart! Due to pride, many will not humble themselves to receive Christ in their heart - “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in ‘YOUR’ heart that God has raised Him from the dead, YOU WILL BE SAVED!” (Ro. 10:9) - that is the power of the Cross!
