“If you want to change the world, start by making your bed,” quote by retired Admiral William McRaven, formal Navy seal, as he addressed a graduating class. His speech is one of the most inspirational and motivating speeches I have every heard. It has some biblical basis, even if not intended. Paul in his letter to Timothy uses the example of a soldier when comparing the Christ follower. To be a soldier one must have discipline, determination, obedience and purpose - a “I will never give up” attitude! The training is hard and meant to prepare you for the real thing! Salvation is not based on works or legalism but still calls the “good soldier of Jesus Christ” to a disciplined life with the goal in mind - “a vessel for honor, sanctified and useful for the Master.” (cf. 2 Timothy 2: 21)
Just as there are things that can hinder or advance the soldier and the mission, there are those things that can hinder or advance the mission of the Christ follower and the work of God’s church. We too, are called to change the world - “go make disciples!” It’s usually the little things that hinder or advance that calling. Paul gave further instructions of grace in the second chapter of Timothy to help advance the gospel. He reminds us not to strive about words to no profit. To shun and avoid foolish and ignorant disputes. To quit quarreling and to depart from iniquity. All these things are not befitting of a Christ follower and hinder the gospel from advancing. Instead Paul says focus on what really matters - the truth of God’s word. God’s word is the only sure and solid foundation - for life and death! God’s word says to “pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those that call on the Lord.” God’s word says not to avoid the truth but, “in humility, correct those who are in opposition.” Why? So that they might come to their senses and repent! God help us to never hinder the gospel, in word or deed, but instead make every effort to advance the gospel of Jesus Christ, in word and deed - even in the seemingly little things!
