The Bible says that the prophet Jonah, though reluctant, preached repentance to the people of Nineveh - they repented and became “recipients of God’s goodness” (mercy/grace). One-hundred years later, the prophet Nahum warned of God’s coming judgment on Nineveh - they would be “recipients of God’s judgement.” What happened, what changed? Well, God didn’t change, but the people of that next generation departed from God. They regressed from following God and fell prey to abundance; selfishness; complacency; apathy; and back to the bondage of a sinful life-style - “backslidden” state. Are these things that are becoming more frequent and stronger upon the earth (i.e. fires, earthquakes, hurricanes) a sign of God’s judgment? I don’t believe so. But they should remind us that this life is temporary and that we all shall stand before God someday and give an account. Jesus forewarned us in the gospels that the very thing that is going on in our world would take place. (cf. Luke 21: 25-28) We are all going to stand before Jesus someday, and we do not want to be in a “backslidden” state at His appearing! God in His mercy and grace will use the natural elements to help us turn to Him. God said He is not willing that any should perish - no not one! But we must turn to Christ, and follow Him - allow Christ to be formed in us. Yes, God is a God of love, mercy and grace. But He is also a Jealous God (cf. Exodus 20: 1-4), He is Judge and He is Just. God is the God of new beginnings and second chances! Life is not about how you start, but how you finish! Jesus’ prayer for you and me is that we finish well! Finish well my friends - “because your redemption draws near” - Jesus
“The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him.” - Nahum 1: 7
