    The Crown of Old Men

    September 10, 2021

Happy Grandparents Day (12th)!  It is well said that “our greatest blessings call us grandma and grandpa!”  Proverbs says “children’s children are the crown of old men, and the glory of children is their father.” (Prov.17:6)

Becky and I are blessed with four grandchildren - each one special and unique, or as the psalmist penned, “fearfully and wonderfully made!”

I love my two children, but there is something extra special about grandchildren.  When I look at them they bring me pure joy!  I have said that “I would die for my grandchildren.”  Although that is a true statement, they don’t need me to die for them (Jesus did that, more importantly He rose again!), but they need me to live for them.  For me to truly live for them I must live for the Lord Jesus and walk in His ways!  When I see my grandchildren I know that I want to spend eternity with them some day!

As I ponder grandparents day on the weekend of remembering 911, I am saddened by those that did not have a chance to see their children, grandchildren, family or friends again. My thoughts and prayers go out to all those that have lost loved ones and friends.  But the gospel of Jesus Christ is the gospel of hope - for today, tomorrow and beyond the grave!  Jesus’ greatest desire is that we will all one day be with Him and one another of all eternity!  But we must follow after Him now - “if the heart is joined to God, the feet will follow hard after Him (Spurgeon).

Most parents want to give the very best to their children.  The bible suggests that the best legacy that we can give our loved ones is the kind of life we live.  A godly character is the most precious gift that we can give.

History tells us that it is often the third generation that abandons the faith - we must pray for our children and grandchildren that the Lord will keep His hand of blessing on their lives!

“Blessed is every one who fears the LORD, who walks in His ways…you shall be happy, and it shall be well with you…the LORD bless you…all the days of your life.  Yes, may you see your children’s children!” (Ps 128)
