The bible says that “the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch.”
(cf. Acts 11: 26b) It is interesting that 83 percent of Americans identify themselves as Christians. The word Christian given to the disciples, by the world, was a derogatory statement meaning “belonging to Christ.” When Americans say they are Christian, are they meaning they belong to Christ? Jesus never called His followers Christians, He always used the term disciples. The greek for disciple is machetes, meaning “student, learner,” a follower that adheres to the teaching, life and conduct. Within the context of the bible that means that you have answered the call to know Christ, to follow Him and to make other disciples - that is the mission statement given to “His” church by Jesus Himself!(cf. Matthew 28: 18-20)
So, my question, if 83 percent of Americans call themselves Christians - why haven’t we completed our mission statement?! Well I think we all know the answer. My challenge is to the church - you and me. Why aren’t we completing our mission? Could it be we are so caught up in “doing” church that we aren’t being “the church?!” I’m just asking. Jesus’ call is to follow Him. His mission (the great commission, Matthew 28) is not “The Great Suggestion.” Jesus has called you and me to a different way of life - His disciples. He has given us His authority to “Go” and He promises He will empower us (Holy Spirit) and always be with us. What are we waiting for?!
In His Service,
